Shooting Star Kinetic Art Sculpture (4,381 Views)
Print This Post | May 28th, 2006 | EMail This PostThe Shooting Star sculpture was created as an entry in the Rising Star project put on by the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco. This piece is almost 6′ tall at rest, a little taller in motion, and weighs about 120 lbs. It is made entirely from scrap steel which was hand cut, polished and fabricated. The work has been clear powder coated for long lasting protection against the elements.
The main feature of this sculpture is the kinetic design in which the two stars rotate at the top of the piece. The interesting thing about the rotation is the combination of speed and duration. Although the movement is fairly slow, the stars remain in motion for up to half an hour after being held vertically and simply dropped.
The piece was very popular at the recent Rising Stars opening and most people told me they felt the motion was quite “soothing”, like sitting on the beach and watching the waves roll in. You can see a 30 second clip of the sculpture in motion here:

Incidentally, the show received some press such as this article in the Dallas Morning News which ran a photo of my sculpture as the only photo to accompany it.
A few folks stopped to get their photo taken with the sculpture as well. ![]()
