Rhodes in May

After spending time in Athens and Thessaloniki we were ready for some Greek Island action. First stop - Rhodes.

This ancient island is characterized by the excellent condition of the ruins left from the Middle Ages all the way back to the time before Christ. There is plenty to see and do on Rhodes, but this not exactly the island for lounging on beaches.

The most important historical feature of the island is a perfectly preserved Castle and medieval city known as “Old Town”. People have been living and working here for centuries.

There are plenty of bed and breakfast hotels within the Old Town if one desires to stay here and get a feel for what it must have been like 500 years ago.

One warning though, I ended up with some really severe breathing problems because of allergies. So severe that I had to move to the Hilton and lost a day with the group while recovering. (Incidentally, the Rhodes Hilton Resort was the nicest hotel we stayed at on this trip and possibly my favorite Hilton ever. I highly recommend it.) Here are a couple beach shots from the Hilton property.

If you suffer from allergies or asthma I would suggest staying outside the old town and just venturing in for a day trip.

There are plenty of shops and eateries in the Old Town, most of which were what I would consider medium to high quality stuff. Generally speaking, the stuff here is better than what you find in Athens, and a little more expensive.

If you happen to make it onto a boat around the island you will see some truly beautiful scenery and coastline.

In addition, there is an ancient site at the other end of the island from the Old Town which is built on a hill with beautiful views and containing a miniature Parthenon.

Here are two panoramas taken from the top near the Parthenon.

You have to ride the bus for about 40 minutes to get there, then you have to climb a LOT of hills and stairs. But I’d say it is definitely worth the work. Of course, there is shopping and places to eat here too.
