Next stop… Thessaloniki (1 Views)
Print This Post | May 3rd, 2006 | EMail This PostAfter spending time in Athens, we traveled to Thessaloniki, or Thessalonica, or Salonica as the natives call it, to visit with relatives and spend time in Greece’s second largest city. Although Athens has some really cool stuff, Salonica is a much nicer city. At about one quarter the size, it’s still big enough to find about anything you want, yet it seems much cleaner, a little more modern, and a bit safer.
Everywhere you go in Greece they have built buildings on top of buildings for centuries, but Thessalonica has some places where you can really get a feel for what that means. In some places archeologists dig up nearly complete structures and you can see how much farther down the ground was a couple of thousand years ago.
The law doesn’t allow building on ancient artifacts, so even if an entire city block of ruins is uncovered nothing gets built there. This is a fantastic example of such a site, and the best thing about it is that you can actually go down and walk around in the area. This is very unusual as many of the ancient sites are closed. You can look, but you can’t get in.
While wandering the city we stopped for some sweets.
In the evening we went and had dinner on the sea. Here’s a view of sunset from our table while we ate.
The Greeks are some of the best boaters in the world, and you’ll find a wide range of them docked along the harbors. From little boats…
To big ones.
