Modern Again (1 Views)

I call this piece Modern Again because, even though I was originally inspired by some 1960’s art hanging in a museum, this piece feels quite modern and right at home on my own wall. Still, I’ll give it up because I make all of this stuff so others will hopefully enjoy it, not just so I can keep it. (At least that’s what my wife keeps reminding me. :-)

At 30″ x 30″ this piece is larger than it looks in the photo, and is mounted on hangers which allow it to float 2″ from the surface of the wall making for a very nice shadow effect if lit properly. I purposefully made it not quite symmetrical, and then asked several differnt people which side is up. At first they think they know, but later they decide it doesn’t matter. The wall mounts were designed so that the piece can be hung in any direction, or even diagonally.

This piece is made from steel and custom ground to give a vibrant finish that reflects light in all directions. I find that mild steel, if ground properly, gives the most reflective finish of all metals… but coating it dulls the surface a bit. So I chose to leave this piece uncoated. Since it has not been coated, it must be displayed only indoors and kept away from moisture.

Even though I made only one of these pieces, I will make more (a few… not a bunch) upon request because I think they look so cool. Each will be slightly differnt, but generally the same.
