My New Personal Knife (1 Views)
Print This Post | January 2nd, 2006 | EMail This PostThis is my new personal carry knife. The blade is constructed of 200+ layers of 1084, high carbon steel, and 15N20, which has high nickel content. It is a random pattern Damascus with a special twisted ladder pattern applied. As you can see, it was ground to ensure that the pattern creates a wave along the blade edge. The blade has been differentially hardened and the edge should be in the Rockwell C area of 57-58.
The guard is made of nickel silver, and the handle is stabilized maple. Everything was hand sanded to a 600 grit finish and then buffed.

I like all your knives.
The shape of the blades is outstanding.
The technical details you describe indicate a care in construction that you can be proud of.
God forbid that you should ever have to fight your knives, though. The handles on your knives are too small around and too round. I believe that you would find that the knife would twist in your hand because your hand would be very wet with sweat (and blood).

Thanks for the compliments.
I totally agree with you that the knives I have on the site at the moment are not fighting knives. These knives are all more utilitarian. In the case of this particular knife it is very “showy”. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great knife for general use, but lets face it no one really NEEDS a damascus blade with resin injected, buffed scales for a daily carry knife.
If I were to build a true fighter, I would likely use a rough micarta handle with a large guard and a thicker more grippy handle. Perhaps I’ll have to try my hand at one of those sometime soon…
Thanks again,
John
