This piece of modern, geometric sculpture was essentially a study in several techniques for me. Created out of 2″ x 2″ tubular steel, and standing about 5′ tall, this sculpture was cut and welded together in such a way that there are no visible weld marks. It was designed so that when viewed up close one would wonder how in the world it was put together. Additionally, the entire surface of this piece was texture ground to reflect light in all different directions, using a different grinding technique for each of the three main sections.

It is rather hard to tell from the photo, but each of the squares or rectangles is angled in a slightly different direction. Even though that is the case, the center of gravity (and balance) is directly under the middle of the bottom rectangle. The piece will actually stand perfectly on a flat surface even without the round base at the bottom. This was done so that I could attach a commercial grade ball bearing to the bottom of the base so that the sculpture can be freely rotated. (In fact, you can actually give it a good spin just for fun. :-)

One other interesting fact… 100% of this steel was recycled from the junk yard. I believe this demonstrates that recycled materials can be turned into museum quality art in the hands of the right person (not that I’m claiming this is museum quality mind you).
